URW Font Work

  1. Enhance the entire base 35 with Greek and Cyrillic as was done for the 12 fonts in the previous order. Four variations of Courier, Times, and Helvetica have been completed. We would like the same update for Helvetica Condensed/Narrow (4), Gothic (4), Bookman (4), Century Schoolbook (4), Palatino (4), and Chancery (1). A total of 21 fonts to be updated. Dingbats and Symbol should not need updating.
  2. We would like the 35 base fonts licensed in GPL and AFPL and the rest of the fonts to be AFPL. Peter suggested a price in an email to Miles for expanding the license from AFPL to dual AFPL/GPL. That price is okay for engineering.
  3. All bug fixes to the currently licensed fonts should be included: We have the 80 fonts for PCL, 136 fonts for PS/PDF, Wingding fonts for SOT. I recommend Miles review all invoices from URW and make sure we have the latest/greatest for each order.
  4. We’d like all fonts to be delivered in Truetype, Type 1, and OTF/CFF, the last format is not to be confused with OTF/Truetype - We want Type 2 in an OTF wrapper. It would be simplest if URW delivered 136 fonts in the 3 formats with all the associated metric files.
  5. The base 35 should exactly match the corresponding 35 fonts in the 136 font release. This is not the case now. If the fonts are packaged as suggested in item (4) there won’t be chance for error.
  6. All metric files should be included with the fonts. Again we like the idea of generating all 136 font and metric files in a fresh identifiable release, as above.
  7. We have never had a complete and correct mapping from URW names to industry names. We would like to have that, this is probably best classified as a bug fix.
  8. We would like the embedded exclusion updated to include files other than PS and PDF, details of which can be found here: http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=696190

Also, a user has sent an email to URW concerning this same issue.

The following are for marketing to review, engineering does not think they are necessary:

  1. Fonts outside the base 35 should not be expanded to include Cyrillic and Greek.
  2. Engineering does not think it is necessary to consider other language or character additions beyond what we have and Cyrillic/Greek for any of the fonts.

Comments

URW has delivered the fonts and agreed to license the base 35 with dual AGPL and Open Font License (OFL) so we will not be using the GPL for the fonts. Instructions for using the OFL can be found at: http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=OFL#83afb016. This license should also solve the embedded exclusion issue in item 8 above.
